India is the second largest country in terms of population in world. Rapid industrialization, urbanization and smart cities are the most important topics about which everyone is talking all around the country. The side product of development knows as waste is increasing at alarming rate. Over 68.8 million tones of waste is getting generated per year and waste generation increases by 60% every decade.
Lack of data, awareness, and qualified human resources are the biggest challenges in waste management. People are getting aware about waste management but the pace of awareness is so slow that soon our ecosystem will start choking. Waste Management has become a matter of great concern to most city corporations, and there have been some instances of management collapse even in metropolitan cities in the year 2015. All this build-up took place in last decade, which is why many corporations have awakened to the rude shock.
But fortunately, people are waking from the slumber & trying to solve the issues without government’s help. Here, we would like to mention two housing complex (i) Progressive Apartments & (ii) Technocrat in Gurgaon where residents started segregation of waste at source & achieved 95% success rate. Segregated dry waste is collected by us & the wet waste goes for vermi composting.
It is the responsibility of each Human to come forward and take initiative for proper waste management because we have to give a good, clean society to our coming generation. Every type of waste is different and there handling is also different. So segregation of waste as per type and giving it in responsible hand is necessary.
We hope more & more housing societies will take up the matter with their RWAs & make Gurgaon a smart city.
